Beginner's Bookbinding Course - 2nd & 3rd June 2018

LOCATION: NSW WRiter's Centre, Callan Park, Rozelle. The NSW Guild of Bookbinders Bindery.
Learn how to make beautiful handmade books for either your own personal use as a journal, sketch-book or notebook; or give them as a much appreciated gift to a loved one. A perfect and unique present at any time of the year.
The aim of this course is to familiarise you with the necessary knowledge and skills to start you on a journey to make your own books.
The Bookbinding for Beginners Course will run at the NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders' professionally equipped Ralph Lewis Bindery at the NSW Writers' Centre in Rozelle.
The Guild is a non-profit organisation with the following objectives:
• To promote and exhibit the art of the hand-bound book
• To maintain the traditional craft bookbinding skills
• To seek and exert a progressive influence on the design and technique of bookbinding.
• To further the cause of book arts in general
This is without doubt one of the best course aimed at absolute beginners level, designed for everyone.
However, please note, good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
This course is designed to provide a good working knowledge of materials and techniques. You will develop skills in both the production and design of hand made books enabling you to go onto more complex and experimental bindings.
Traditional book structures are explored, using materials that will endure over time.
You will learn skills fundamental to hand bookbinding and be able to repeat and practice all the skills learned.

learn grain direction, paper cutting, sewing sections and covering, select and use appropriate materials
In this workshop you will complete four projects and learn four bookbinding techniques to take home"
• A Japanese Stab Binding in full book cloth
• A Venetian Journal covered in full leather with decorative stitching and a leather tie
• A beautiful keepsake box covered in decorative paper
• A multi section, case bound book covered in full cloth and decorative paper
Students are not required to bring any tools or materials, as these are all provided as part of the course fee. A small beginners kit, including a bone folder, sewing thread, spine lining material, bookboard and headbands is provided to you to take home. You may care to bring an apron, although there are spares at the bindery, and the Guild has its own custom made aprons for sale to members.
The course fee includes membership of the NSW Guild of Bookbinders. Please note, all membership will be valid to 30 June 2019. Members can use the bindery during opening hours and have borrowing rights to the Guild’s comprehensive library of bookbinding books and DVDs.
