GOLD TOOLING ON BOOK COVERS USING REAL GOLD LEAF
TUTOR: Ted Chapman
DATES: Saturday 18th August 2018
TIME: 9.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.
COST: Members $130; Non-members $150
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.
In this workshop participants will learn the basics of tooling on leather using real gold leaf. This traditional method of decoration requires exacting preparation but, with practice, the results are superior to using metallic foil.
Under Ted's expert tuition, participants will be taught how to prepare the surface of the leather with glaire and how to use a gold pad and knife. Each participant will be provided with their own leather plaquette, simulating a book cover. On this, you will build up designs using the Guild’s extensive collection of brass hand-finishing tools, fillets and rolls.
In this workshop you will:
• practise tooling lines across the spine, using a pallet
• practise lettering using a type holder and brass letters
All materials and tools are supplied at the Bindery
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
