Other Information:
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.

Course description:
The techniques of inlays and onlays are used to decorate the external surface of a full-bound leather book. This decoration, using leathers of different colours from those on the main cover, can be applied to front and/or back boards, or even the spine.

Course content:
In this workshop, guided by Ted Chapman, participants will learn how to pare onlay leather to extreme thinness so that, when applied, it lies close to the surface of the cover leather.

Learning outcome:
You will learn:
• how to back pieces of inlay leather so that they lie level with the rest of the cover material when inset.
• how to cut and bevel the edges so that the inlay and cover material are flush where they join.

Materials:
Participants should bring their usual small tools, including a scalpel with a few spare blades, and a paring knife, if possible. All materials are supplied at the Bindery

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied.
