TUTOR: Ted Chapman
DATES: Saturday 16th June 2018
TIME: 9.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.
COST: Members $110; Non-members $120
The techniques of inlays and onlays are used to decorate the external surface of a full-bound leather book. This decoration, using leathers of different colours from those on the main cover, can be applied to front and/or back boards, or even the spine.
In this workshop, guided by Ted Chapman, participants will learn how to pare onlay leather to extreme thinness so that, when applied, it lies close to the surface of the cover leather.
You will also learn i) how to back pieces of inlay leather so that they lie level with the rest of the cover material when inset, and ii) how to cut and bevel the edges so that the inlay and cover material are flush where they join.
Participants should bring their usual small tools, including a scalpel with a few spare blades, and a paring knife, if possible. All materials will be supplied.
