Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.
The range of sewings to create this attractive and interesting book will greatly extend your knowledge of spine-sewn books.
The text pages of this book will be constructed with art paper of between 250 and 300gsm. The book can, therefore, be used for art work. The sewing is quite intricate but detailed instructions, line by line for the sewing, will be provided as well as a demonstration for each sewing. From the illustration below you can identify the top and bottom sewings as Coptic. The next stitching is the Celtic Weave and the central sewing is the Icicle. The sewing begins by joining the cover with the first section using the Coptic stitch.
The main outcome is learning how to manipulate and manage the various sewings to create this unusually attractive book.
All materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fee. Bring your usual tools but spare tools are available at the bindery. Tea and coffee are also available.
