This course is for anyone with an interest in hand binding. It is a very thorough course providing essential skills that will take you through your whole binding journey. It is also a great refresher course for those who have learnt binding elsewhere or wish to pursue bookbinding again after a break.
You MUST have completed a Beginner’s course with us or equivalent.
Beginners course can be booked here:
Please note, good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
The case binding is a way of making books whereby the cover (the case) is made separately from the text block and then attached to it. This course is designed to provide a good working knowledge of materials and techniques for a novice or beginner binder.
You will develop skills in both the production and design of hand made books enabling you to go onto more complex and experimental bindings. The course focus on the making of two case binding. You will learn to cover one with full cloth and end papers and the other with quarter cloth and decorative paper. You will learn skills fundamental to hand bookbinding and be able to repeat and practice all the skills learned.
Traditional book structures are explored, using materials that will endure over time. You will get to use a variety of tools and materials, and learn how to apply them to the sewing and construction of your book.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Complete two style of case bound books hand sewn, with hardcovers.
• Learn grain direction, paper cutting, sewing sections and covering
• Attach head bands
• Select and use appropriate covering materials and papers for making books
All materials and tools are supplied at the Bindery
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
