Learn the art of beautiful writing, Calligraphy. In this introductory workshop we will learn the techniques to write two different styles. This is a hands on course where you will have plenty of opportunity to practice the techniques.
We will have the opportunity to discuss the period of history each hand was developed and how the use of decorative writing has changed. This is not an illumination course but we will discuss the importance of presentation and display, with a few simple decorative ideas based on the styles we will have practiced. The importance of preparation will be stressed. We will not be using ink, but pre-manufactured pens, but the differences and impact on technique will be addressed
• To write the alphabet in Uncial and Gothic hands
• Brief history of each hand and awareness of famous examples
• Introductory ideas on presentation and decorative features.
All materials and tools are supplied at the Bindery
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
