ABOUT THIS COURSE
In this course you will learn:
Simple examination,
mechanical cleaning,
spot testing and solubility testing,
blotter washing,
immersion washing,
simple stain reduction,
local resizing of paper with methyl cellulose,
immersion resizing of paper with gelatine,
selecting and toning paper repair materials,
leaf edge reinforcement,
fine tear repair,
large loss infills.
About KAREN VIDLER
Karen Vidler (FIIC, PMAICCM) began her journey into the Book & Paper conservation profession in 1993 after qualifying as a Librarian. The journey started as a Conservation Technician conducting a condition and conservation needs survey of 178 Middle Eastern MSS dating from the 12th – 19th centuries. Her formal education includes Book & Paper Conservation, Fine Bookbinding, Leather Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education). Karen's is keen to share her fascination for the structures, materials and media that compose a book and techniques for their conservation with students and professional conservators during her teaching in higher education, professional development programs and vocational training.
Karen’s practical conservation career in both institutional and private conservation practice has seen an accumulation of skills and responsibilities to undertake minimal and remedial book & paper conservation, preservation programs, teaching and business management. She is skilled in prioritising workflows through the stages of conservation: Client consultation; survey; examination and testing; written estimates and photo-documentation; allocating time and resources; staff training and delegation; undertaking item level and batch treatments of book & archive materials; and project management. She has contributed papers to various bookbinding and conservation journals and is always keen to pass on skills and knowledge through her teaching practice.
Karen has managed Book Conservation Services since 2006.
GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION:
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Please wear closed in shoes.
The bindery opens half an hour before the commencement of the class. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery. Shops and cafes are not close.
