Course description

TUTOR: Penrith Printing Museum printers OUR GUILD CONTACT: Jean Kropper DATE: TBA TIME: 10.00am – 4.00pm COST: $125.00 MEMBERS ONLY! LOCATION: The Penrith Museum of Printing, Penrith NSW If you are interested in this course please register your interest by contacting us. It will book out fast. This is our first "beyond bookbinding" course, exploring the art of the book beyond the binding. More courses will be run is there is the interest. Why you should take this class: Despite our increased reliance on technology for everything from work, to getting groceries, to meeting people, we are seeing people use print in ways that are increasingly meaningful. The power of print breaks through all the digital noise. DESCRIPTION: Do you love a beautifully written headline, poem or printed book? Letterpress is a satisfying medium for putting your words on paper. Learn about the history of letterpress printing in our well-equipped studio. This introductory six hour workshop will cover the history and basics of traditional letterpress printing in a small group. You will have the opportunity to learn how to hand set metal type in a composing setting stick, transfer it to a chase and lock up the chase for printing. From there you’ll learn how to ink up, operate and clean an Adana 200mm X 125mm tabletop press. This will give you the skills to print on your own. The Adana is the most popular of the ‘starter’ presses. You will take home a small letterpress project of your own devising. All materials included. What to bring: Come prepared with a quotation, haiku or a message of what you’d like to typeset and print. We recommend approx. 50 – 100 words. Note: Covered shoes are required. Wear old clothes so you are not worried about getting ink on them. Not suitable for people who can’t stand for long periods of time. Food is not provided but you’re most welcome to bring refreshments with you. We have a fridge and a microwave. Tea and coffee is complimentary. Please note that the workshop is being held at the Penrith Museum of Printing!
