The Bindery

Course description

Tutor: Monica Oppen Date: 26th – 27th July Time: 9.30am – 4.00pm English master bookbinder, Dominic Riley writes: “The millimetre binding is an elegant, strong, quarter-leather binding which is ingenious in construction and fairly straightforward to make… It was developed by Danish master binder John Haltoft.” The binding has its name from the sparing use of leather, only a millimetre of leather creeps onto the board. Although it is classed as a case binding the attachment of the cover or case is very different to the traditional method which you learn in Level 2 and Level 3. This binding is a great introduction to the use of leather which will be used of the spine of the book. In this course you will be binding a printed book, The Poets’ Alphabet. The bookblock was commissioned and published by the Guild in 1992. It is a small book so time won’t be taken up with sewing the bookblock and we can focus on the new techniques. We will also revisiting the flexible slipcase (Level 2) and there will be an introduction to blocking to create the title patch to go on the front cover. All materials are included. Bring your small tools if you wish to.
