Chinese Thread Book with Kathy Lobo

ABOUT the workshop:
You will make a Chinese Thread Book that has 15 “secret pockets” and Kathy will recount their rich history from Northern China.  She will show several variations of the thread book and explain how you can use the “secret pocket” structures in your own artist’s books. 

You will learn how to make several “secret pocket” structures, each of which can be scaled up or down for use in other projects. It is helpful to have some experience in folding paper.


The tutor will provide a kit of Lokta paper, card stock for templates and a cover, ribbon, and glue.

You can bring coloured papers, decorative papers or a “old artwork” for embellishment. These can be collaged onto the cover and inside the thread book.  You can bring ribbon to match or use what is provided.

Other Information:
The bindery will be open by 9.30am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery. Shops and cafes are not close.

IMPORTANT:
Good hand-eye coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Please wear closed-in shoes.

ABOUT Kathy Lobo
Kathy Lobo has been making books and boxes all her life.  She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia College of Art (a.k.a. University of the Arts) . Her degree was is Crafts with a double major in Metals and Fibers.  She took her first formal book binding course at that time.  She has also earned a certificate in traditional Chinese Painting from the Tianjin Fine Art College, Tianjin, China.  She learned about Chinese Thread Books from Ruth Smith, UK, a world expert on the subject.  They meet regularly to make books and boxes together. 
 
Kathy was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where she currently lives.  She has lived overseas for about 20 years in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan and the Sunshine Coast of Australia. Kathy is a member of the New York Center for Book Arts and the New England Book Artists.  She has taught many workshops for adults and children at various art centers and museums.   Her own work is about creating order in chaos, threads into cloth, papers into books and boxes.  Her work been displayed in galleries and is part of collections in museums such as the Museum of Women Artists in Washington D.C. and libraries, such as the Queensland State Library in Brisbane.
