DESCRIPTION:
The long-stitch binding is a very early stationary binding used in the middle ages. It was still in use up until the end of the 19th century in some areas of Europe. The binding is comparatively simple. It is a stitched, non-adhesive binding meaning no adhesive is used in the binding process.

The long-stitch binding has once again become a popular hand-made journal binding style since the interest in the book arts has flourished over the last decade or so.

Many long-stitch bindings are very floppy, due to the sections being widely spaced which results in an unsatisfactory book. In this course you will bind the sections of the book onto a suitably stiff card carefully measured so that the binding has an integrity and firmness which gives the book strength and durability. The leather cover will be slipped on so the notebook can be replaced.

MATERIALS:
All materials are supplied and included in the workshop fee. Bring your usual tools but spare tools are available at the bindery. For this class you can also bring your printed sheets.

IMPORTANT:
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.

Other Information:
The bindery will be open by 9am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery. Shops and cafes are not close.
