Limited to 7 students
Suitable for beginners and more advanced binders.
In this class we will focus on the covering materials and cover design. We will explore the relationship between the outer and inner boards so the design can flow between the outside and inside of the cover.
You will learn how to use a leather paring machine. With this machine you can thin the leather down to a thickness which can be easily turned in around boards. This will be a stress-free introduction to leather paring!
You can explore leather onlay and inlay. What's that? Come and find out!
You can use suede.
You can combine the leather with cloth and/or decorated papers.
You can explore using unusual materials. (Within limits!)
The binding itself will be a single section or long-stitch binding. This will allow time for complete concentration on the cover design and development.
NB If you are interested in cover design but don’t want to work with leather you can still join the class and work with cloth and decorated papers. If you have bookcloth that you have made or decorated you can bring this.
