The Simplified Binding developed by Sün Evrard in 1984 has a streamlined look. This is an elegant, versatile binding which has applications ranging from basic simple notebooks, restoration as well as fine design bindings.
It provides you with many options as the leather spine assembly is made and affixed to the bookblock before the boards. This split process of making the cover allows for many opportunities in the design.

The workshop will focus on fine binding techniques and leather paring.

Comprehensive notes will be supplied. A tool kit list will be forwarded upon enrolment.

Joy Tonkin is a master bookbinder and book & paper conservationist who has been working out of Bookarts Bindery with her husband John Tonkin, also a master bookbinder, for 30 years. Together and individually, they have been commissioned to work on distinctive one-off book projects and have run many specialist bookbinding workshops, comprising a range of traditional and contemporary bookbinding techniques. Both Joy & John have exhibited their work internationally and many of their special bindings can be found in both private and public collections around the world.

A list will be sent to those who enrol. Course notes will be provided.
Participants may bring along their own usual small tools. A textblock and all materials will be provided as well as a tools for those without.

Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.
