TUTOR: Jean Riley
DATE: Saturday 3rd November 2018
TIME: 9.30am – 4pm
COST: Member $125 Non-member $135
All levels of experience
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.
In this workshop you will be given the opportunity to create two books that have
attractive spine decoration.
The first book, the Crossed Structure, is sewn on straps that form part of the front and
back covers. Thus, the decorative spine sewing and the covers create a visually
attractive book from all sides.
The second book, an Islamic binding, is just one of many styles of binding used to bind
books on Islamic teachings. The text is sewn onto straps in a traditional Western
method and then laced into a complex cover that weaves back around itself and forms
front and back covers and one overlapping second front cover.
In completing these two books you will be introduced to unusual and creative ways to
sew and cover books that will look attractive on your book shelves.
All materials are supplied at the Bindery. Just bring your
usual tools but spare tools are available at the workshop.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
