Suitable for Beginners. Every Repairs workshop teachers different techniques.

Other Information:
Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.

Course information:
This workshop is intended to give participants a basic introduction to leather, book cloth and paper repairs, and to provide advice to more experienced practitioners on particular problems. General advice will be given, along with some demonstrations. Participants are invited to bring along on the day their own items requiring attention. The tutor will assess these and advice will be given on suitable treatment options. Participants will be able to work on their books during the day, under the supervision of the tutor.

Course content:
The tutor will demonstrate a number of techniques, including:
• Simple paper repairs
• The steps involved in re-backing a book, (both reattaching a detached spine and creating a new one)
• Rejoining boards
• Use of Japanese paper in repairs and rejoining components
• Choice of repairs materials
• Toning and matching new components to the original material

Examples of books will be provided for participants to work on. Participants may bring their own clothbound book, with spine detached, to work on if they wish. Some time will be available to discuss the repair approach for other examples brought along on the day.

All materials and tools will be provided. Participants may bring along their own small too tools.

Other Information:
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
Please wear closed in shoes.
