Course information:
Bookplates are miniature artworks, made to be pasted into books to indicate the owner of the book. For bookbinders, they are a beautiful thing to include in your hand bound books, especially if they are to be included in competitions or exhibitions. You can be sure that your book won’t go astray! Bookplates can be made using a variety of media, including etching, woodcut, digital, etc, but this course will focus on linocut bookplates as an introduction to both the small format and to printmaking.

In this two day course you will be introduced to the basics of linocut in order to execute two bookplate designs. These will be designed and cut on day 1 and printed on day 2. There will be an introduction to bookplates and their history. The tutor will guide you in how to design an effective and graphic linocut, and demonstrate different linocut techniques. You will also be introduced to safe linocutting and printing methods.

Lino, paper and printing materials will be provided.

Tools and equipment will be available. Students can bring their own lino-cutting tools. To comply with COVID-19 safety it is recommended that tools are not shared between students.

Tutor: Brigitta Summers has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School. She majored in printmaking.

Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Please wear closed in shoes.

The bindery will be open by 9am. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be a lunch break of 30 minutes. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. There is a fully equipped kitchen adjacent to the bindery. Shops and cafes are not close.
